The Vain Harvester was our first experience with a disposable surgical instrument design and engineering. We were approached by A&E Medical to assist with the design of the Vain Harvester which supposed to have two extended limes, light source, power source and a mechanism to force disposal and prevent a reuse of the instrument. We spent a significant amount of time designing the housing of the device to be user friendly, ergonomically correct and easy to use in the OR. We had to design the side sliding buttons to be able to have a self locking mechanism built in and to be able to support a great amount of weight.
